Director, Graphic Services — Managed staff of 4 designers, 2 photo editors, and 3 production managers for a 9.2 billion dollar international relief agency serving more than 100 million people per year in more than 100 countries. Developed a wide range of materials including direct mail, posters, brochures, conference materials, display pieces, bookmarks, annual reports, templates, and more.

Director of Design and Illustration, Children’s Books — Promotion from art director to this position encompassed oversight of all photographers, photo editors, and photography from creative resources, location shots, budgets for shoots, and contract negotiations with photographers, agents, and stock agencies. List grew from 60 titles to more than 100. Served on Brand Committee which addressed use of the National Geographic brand throughout the society and its perception, recognition and success in the marketplace. Implemented transition from Quark Publishing System to Adobe Creative Suite, InDesign.
Director of Design, Children’s Publishing — Managed a staff of 6 art directors and designers over three publishing groups: National Geographic Explorer and National Geographic Young Explorer magazines (the largest and fastest growing school magazines in the country), Children’s Books, and School Publishing. Gained experience working with diverse business groups with various creative needs and merging efforts for optimal use of resources and growth of all divisions. Participated in focus group testing for brand and launch of new products. Established training for photo editors to work with color separators and trained art directors for mastery of Photoshop. Completed in-house management training program. Also conceived and/or acquired and edited many award-winning titles.
Director of Design, Children’s Books — Continued to grow Children’s list and developed award-winning line of photo-poetry books and photo history books using historical reenactments which required scheduling, scouting, and casting for photo shoots. Introduced workflow improvements and scheduling systems to manage the growing list. Spearheaded Society-wide initiative to streamline, economize, and legalize font usage. Heavily involved in concepts and acquisitions, budgeting, and production/manufacturing. Worked with photographers, illustrators, and artists’ representatives negotiating contracts through directing final product. Designed and/or directed multiple new series, formats, and award-winning titles with complex visual components including new and historical illustration and photography, maps, charts, and other graphic information.
Art Director, Books — Managed and directed design of all Children’s Books and several lines of adult book series and special photography books working with many National Geographic award-winning photographers. Children’s list grew from 24 titles to more than 60 titles per year. Promoted to Director of Design, Children’s Books.

Publisher, Wild Honey Imprint — founded gift, novelty, and trade children’s books packaging division. Responsible for all concepts, acquisitions, design, production, sales, marketing, and manufacturing for 22 titles annually. This position required frequent travel to Asia and South America for production oversight and travel throughout the US and to Italy and Germany for sales and marketing. Discovered
and nurtured new talent.
Art Director, Ottenheimer Publishers, Inc. – Managed staff of 12 designers and large freelance staff of designers, illustrators, and photographers producing more than 200 adult and children’s titles annually. License work with Beatrix Potter (Frederick Warne) and Pillsbury. Improved quality of all product and increased sales by more than 120%. Promoted to Publisher, Wild Honey.
